The past year and a half has really been a journey for us into the realm of social media in eyecare as we've tried to find out just exactly how it fits into the industry. Sure, we all had our own Facebook pages, and many of us were already active on Twitter, most of us also had a blog, but it was all in a personal capacity and not for VisionWeb as a company. Fortunately, it didn't take us long to realize that we were really missing out! We are way too excited about this industry to miss anything, so we got our social media presence going and have been moving full speed ahead ever since. In our little adventure, we've come to know some great resources and we thought you might enjoy them too. Here is a list of a few of the blogs, sites, and various social media outlets we recommend:
The Optical Vision Site and Optical Vision Resources
Two ladies that we just adore are the genius behind The Optical Vision Site and Optical Vision Resources. The Optical Vision Site is an upbeat and innovative optical blog that is rapidly becoming the ultimate resource for all things optical. It features daily tips and unique content. Whether you are an Independent retailer, doctor, optician, sales rep, optical vendor or anything else related to optical, you are sure to find something to inform, inspire or even amuse you on The Optical Vision Site. The ladies started Optical Vision Resources, because there was no single- click source to find all the Optical Wholesalers and Distributors that are available to the optical retailer in a web directory format. Each site that they post on Optical Vision Resources is screened to insure that the products and services are directly related to optical, eyecare and health. So it's a work in progress for listings of optical and eyecare manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors, importers of eyeglasses, contact lenses, sunglasses, sports eyewear, optical lenses, eyecare accessories, ophthalmic instruments, optical laboratories equipment and supplies, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. The list goes on and on. You can also find these two on Facebook and Twitter. They go by the twitter handle @optigirls.
Blog @ Midwest Lens
Midwest Lens is an ophthalmic laboratory in Kansas and have been a part of the VisionWeb Supplier network for quite some time. Their blog, Blog @ Midwest Lens, covers a wide variety of topics related to the industry. You might find information about a new product or frame line, an eye health related issue, or even an event or promotion. They update their blog regularly and it's always full of good information. You can find them on Twitter with the handle @MidwestLens.
Eyecessorize is The Vision Council‘s campaign to increase awareness of the fashion and lifestyle aspects of eyewear. By sharing the latest in eyewear trends, advances in technology and advice from eyewear experts, The Vision Council educates millions of Americans about options in eyeglasses and sunglasses. That's the description right from their blog, and it's definitely spot on. Lots of great information!
OptiBoard is a message board community that's strictly for the eyecare industry and is always buzzing with great conversations. We first came across the site around 5 1/2 years ago and have followed it ever since. It's a great place for dialogue with colleagues and great, honest opinions. It's definitely one to check out. Oh, and it's free to join.
ODWire is another outstanding message board community in the industry. Over 14,000 ECPs are members of the site which is only open to ECPs. They have the great dialogue that you expect from a message board, and they also host Webinars for their members to participate in on a regular basis. Those Webinars are great events and are definitely something that is great about joining. It's free to join here too.
We know that this doesn't come close to covering everyone, but we wanted to get started somewhere. We'll try to do these types of posts regularly to keep you in the loop. There's so much out there in the world of optical social media! That's something that we couldn't really say a few years ago, so it's nice to see how much we've grown in such a short amount of time. And, we would love to hear your recommendations! Do you have any other sites that you regularly frequent? Or, are you looking for Facebook pages or companies to follow on Twitter? Let us know and we'll help share the information!
